450 Word Statement.

I have chosen to study Architecture at MSA as I think, not only does it appear to be one of the finest Universities in the country for this particular course, it is placed in one of the most exciting cities in Europe. What better place to study Architecture than in a city that is complemented with an exciting range of contemporary and historical architecture. This will help serve as an inspiration as I undertake the course.

I find it extremely hard to choose a single work of architecture I would like to experience in person, as being only seventeen, I have yet to explore so many. However, after beginning to explore the architecture Manchester has to offer there is part of me that wishes to go beyond the United Kingdom and experience Europe. In particular, I would really like to experience the Colosseum in Rome. As the size and beauty, coupled with its ability to function correctly for a building of its time, make it an astounding achievement.

Recently, I visited Manchester Art Gallery. I found it a good experience, as I was able to cast my eyes upon some of the most exciting pieces of fine art. I had the opportunity to explore many different selections. Beginning with the ‘Historic Gallery’, I looked at pieces from the 17th Century right through to the early 19th where themes of ‘Romanticism’ and ‘Industrial revolution’ became apparent. I then observed some of the more contemporary artwork from artists such as, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Henry Moore. Although I found both exhibitions to be a learning curve, I enjoyed the contemporary artwork most as I think it was more relevant to me as a person. As well as the beautiful displays of fine art, there is an interesting gallery on ‘Craft & Design’ featuring ancient pottery through to some of the latest furniture designs. This was a nice twist along side the fine art exhibitions.

Although it is ever changing, at the moment my favourite piece of architecture would have to be the ‘Manchester Town Hall’, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1866. I usually prefer more contemporary buildings, however, after completing my architecture work experience near by, it was hard not to stand back and appreciate this magnificent piece. I found the ‘Neo-gothic’ approach both intricate and intimidating. After some research, this ‘Neo-gothic’ approach is an early take on early English gothic architecture from the 13th century, this choice is said to acknowledge Manchester’s late medieval heritage and was funded by the textile trade.
